Title: Merchandise Manager Dept: Liaison Office

This job description is not meant to be an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities but constitutes a general definition of the position’s scope and function in the company.

General Position Summary:

To oversee all the garment commercialization functions within the office’s jurisdiction to ensure product is of high quality and produced on-time in order to meet Company’s goals.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

• Work with the Country Manager to develop the garment source base for the liaison office, based upon the Company’s Global source strategy guiding principles. Continually monitor and evaluate supplier performance to determine invest, divest, maintain business levels with individual suppliers. Conduct quarterly/seasonal meetings with suppliers to review performance. Establish corrective action plans where applicable. Conduct supplier summits on yearly bases.

• Reviews seasonal garment developments with all category merchandise teams to facilitate and manage possible redundancies in work. Assigns point person on common projects. Facilitates Direct Development opportunities with key suppliers.

• Determines supplier capacities for new seasonal developments, and works with Production Manager on seasonal capacity loads based on established performance metrics. Ensures capacities are being adhered to across categories. Works with Production Manager to resolve Capacity / Delivery issues

• Monitors and develops commercialization dates in the Company’s global calendar and ensures compliance to those deadlines where applicable. Provides feedback to the category merchandisers and home office on unreasonable timelines.

• Develop a consistent approach in managing Company’s business with each merchandising team, in accordance with global commercialization process and procedures. Provides daily coaching in the office and during factory visits. Develop individualized and group training programs for merchandising staff. Work with the country manager on succession planning, and create objective performance evaluations.

• Works collaboratively with other liaison office Merchandise Managers to share best practices.

• Provides guidance and consistency on costing issues. Works across suppliers and product categories to achieve fair and consistent garment costing. Consolidates general office costing information for the home office on generic costing issues.

• Establishes and maintains strong relationships with all applicable departments such as home office categories (design, development, sourcing, materials; Identifies areas for process improvement within the office with solicited feedback from suppliers and home office.

• Investigates new garment sources and initiates supplier profile.

• Initiates supplier trips to the home office to be strategically aligned with new season developments and inspiration opportunities. Collects and presents innovative construction trends to liaison office category teams, and assists in developing category specific trends and innovation for upcoming seasons.

• Implements new process and procedures where applicable into the commercialization process and actively trains and supports there use.

Secondary Functions:

Maintain positive open lines of communication with all Company’s business partners, management, staff, warehouse and other departments in order to contribute to the smooth flow of information and efficient operation of the organization.

Job Complexity:

Job involves a high degree of complexity or difficulty in performing work situations which frequently vary from the norm. Requires the ability to react to both short term problems and long term goals. Work is generally reviewed on a project basis over extended periods of time. Errors in judgment can have significant negative impacts on the profitability, quality and timely delivery of Company’s line and may result in lowered sales and/or profits, and/or a negative impact to the company’s reputation.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Position will have direct authority over a team of liaison office Merchandising staff. Direct reports will generally have 6+ years of industry experience in apparel or textiles. Proven leadership skills are required. Position responsible for training, coaching and managing performance of the Merchandising staff.

Interpersonal Contacts:

Contacts are normally made with others inside and outside the organization. Internal contacts include other department members and multiple functional areas. External contacts are primarily with suppliers and distribution representatives. Interactions focus on information exchange, problem solving and negotiation. Contacts usually contain confidential/sensitive information necessitating discretion at all times. Information may include financial information, strategic planning information and confidential personnel information. Incumbent usually initiates contacts with 50% being by phone/fax/e-mail and the remainder via face-to-face interaction.

Specific Job Skills:

Requires a well-developed ability to read, write, and speak English, in relation to topics of a highly complex or technical nature. Mental ability required to conduct complex business operations, manage interpersonal interactions of a complex and critical nature, develop and cultivate personal and professional relationships within and outside the company. Ability to work well with individuals of different countries and cultures. Effectively deal with work and time pressures in the efficient and effective accomplishment of job requirement. Also must be able to trouble shoot, solve problems of an unusual and complex nature, and make decisions and operate independently with discretion. Must be physically able sit for extended periods of time, operate computer hardware/software including a keyboard, travel extensively both within and outside the United States, during peak activity periods work in excess of 8 hours a day and/or 50 hours per week, and move freely within production facilities.

Education and/or Experience:

Degree in business or a related field. Without degree, relevant work experience required. 5 - 7 years experience in production, merchandising, development or a manufacturing environment, preferably in garment industry or related soft goods industry. 7 - 9 years experience without degree. Work experience directly related to the management of people and sourcing and costing process is desired.

Job Conditions:

Job may require hours that exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week, especially during peak activity periods. Evening and/or weekend work may be required during times of peak activity. May occasionally require exposure to production environment. Position involves periodic International travel to vendors and suppliers.
